So, my mentor dropped a gem on me today: “Build an organizational chart for your business.”
I’m going to be real with y’all—my first thought was, Is he serious? This “business” is literally just me right now, wearing every single hat and juggling everything from design to marketing to customer service. An organizational chart? For one person? It sounded almost laughable.
But then, I paused and thought about it.
When you’re starting a business, it’s so easy to get caught up in the now. Your focus is on what needs to happen today to move the needle—what sales to close, what content to post, what tasks to check off the endless to-do list. And while that hustle is necessary, there’s a different kind of magic that happens when you take a step back and think long term.
Creating an organizational chart, even for a business that’s currently a one-person show, isn’t just busywork. It’s a vision. It’s a declaration of what your business can become. That chart forces you to imagine the roles and people who will one day be part of your team—marketing, operations, finance, customer support, creative direction, and more. It helps you see the structure of the future company you’re building and what it will take to get there.
Even more importantly, it sets you up to work smarter, not harder. It’s like building a blueprint before constructing a house. Sure, it’s just you for now, but by outlining those roles, you start creating a roadmap for the help you’ll need. And when the day comes that you can finally hire someone, you’ll already know exactly where they’ll fit in and what they’ll be responsible for.
The takeaway? Don’t get so wrapped up in today that you neglect to plan for tomorrow. Today’s grind is what builds the dream, but tomorrow’s vision is what makes it sustainable.
So, I’m building that organizational chart. Not for the business I have now, but for the thriving team I’ll have in the future. And trust me, future me is going to be grateful.
Stay focused. Keep building. The wheels are turning, and the future is waiting.
